As a reminder, beginning next week, I will publish the Success Builders articles on the Performance-Centered Leadership Blog instead of sending them by email each week. All the new articles will be postings on the blog, and all the archives will be available either on the blog or in the Success Builders Weekly archive on the web site. To receive updates or reminders about new postings, you can register for updates using your RSS reader (like iGoogle), or else send me an email to be on the email notification list. If you've already sent me a request, then there's no need to send another requst.
Last week, we discussed establishing rituals to drive positive, lasting change. Another key element is to consider how you are framing your motivations. As part of my graduate program, I am studying sustained intentional change with Richard Boyatzis, who has researched this area extensively since 1969. He is truly an international expert. The first – and most important – key to sustained desired change is to have a positive frame or lens for the change.
Consider the following: Back in 2006, I was somewhat upset because I had gained ten pounds or so as a result of my multiple bouts of mono (it's easy to gain weight when you never get out of bed!). I had several attempts at dieting. I was completely committed for a few days but then I didn't see change happen quickly enough or I would eat my favorite foods and I would feel like I had abandoned the diet.
Finally, in November 2006, I changed my thinking. I decided that the goal wasn't to lose ten pounds; the goal was to gain strength and health. Being strong and healthy were important to me and consistent with the image that I had of myself. I began to do the things that a woman who is strong, healthy and fit would do. I stopped weighing myself and focused on health and strength. I still had my pizza once in a while, but the majority of the time I acted consistently with my vision of myself as a strong, healthy and fit woman. I recently had a check-up (which is the only time I find out my weight) and I have now lost twelve pounds. But, most importantly, I am a strong, healthy and fit woman.
How do you tie your goals to your personal vision?
